The caps of the hoodoos are 100 million year old Dakota Sandstone which have protected the 160 million year old softer white Entrada Sandstone from erosion, creating a fairyland of geological formations.
The huge ledge in the foreground makes it impossible to get a clean shot from the ground, so a little imagination is required to visualize what is arguably the best example of entrenched river meanders in the world.
